What we believe about parents

We believe that parents are called to be the primary spiritual influencers of their kids.  When you look at Scripture, you’ll see that God’s plan to transfer spiritual truth from one generation to the next is for parents to fulfill this Biblical role by investing in the spiritual life of their kids.

Deuteronomy 6 says it this way: “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”  Psalm 78 says that the reason parents are to teach God’s commands is “so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.  Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.”  While there are many things we could focus on as a parent (school, grades, sports, etc.), none is more important than the spiritual investment we can make in our kids that will echo into eternity.

We also believe that the church is called to partner with parents by coming alongside you to support, encourage and equip you in this God-given role.  Within our Family Ministries at 121 (CreationLand, 121Kids, Fuel 56, and 121Students), our staff and volunteer leaders work very hard to create intentional environments where Biblical truth is modeled and taught and where children and teenagers are challenged to grow deeper in a relationship with Christ.

We also place a high value on the relational investment that our leaders make in kids and teenagers.  Through these two God-given institutions (Church and Home), our hope is that children will grow into men and women who love God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength and love others as themselves (Mark 12:30).

The Parent Challenge

As the spiritual leader in your home, we want to challenge you to lead your family in studying God's Word together.  Carve out some space at least once a week to sit down as a family and open the Bible together.  Use the Table for Two Devotionals, the Heart Connex devotions from the link above or something else as a guide.  Whatever plan you decide, our challenge is to be in God's Word together as a family on a weekly basis.  For those who take the challenge, just watch and see how God will work in your family through it.
