Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
In this verse, Jesus made a powerful statement to offer comfort to His disciples when telling of His coming departure from them. In confusion and doubt, Thomas had voiced a concern about not knowing where Jesus was going or how to get there. In response, Jesus gently reassured His disciples not to worry, for He had made a way—the only way.
Jesus was continually asked questions by His followers throughout His ministry: Who are you? Why are you here? What are you doing? Why are you doing that? And Jesus continually made it clear that His purpose was to do the work of His Father. To love, to rescue, to restore, and to lead. In John 4:34, Jesus said why He came: “to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.”
Jesus is the only true way to God. Only those who rest in Christ alone for salvation will be saved. Jesus is not only the sole path to eternal life, but He is also the source and guarantor of life itself—abundant life that can never be lost or taken away from us.
• Why is it important to hold to the truth that Jesus is the only way, truth, and life?
• How does this truth bring comfort and encouragement in hardship?
• Pray that God would keep you committed to Him, even in the most difficult moments of life.
