But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
The word “defense” here can be defined as an answer one gives to explain his or her self.
Do you have your response ready? Is it wrapped in kindness and devotion?
As believers, we have to be prepared to defend our faith. This starts by making sure we honor Christ as Lord in our hearts. We should always be ready to give an account for who we are and why we do what we do. This may provide opportunity to gently and respectfully share our hope with others.
This verse in the Message Bible reads as follows: Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy. At any moment, we could encounter someone who wants to know more about our beliefs.
The more familiar and comfortable we are talking about our hope in Christ, the better witnesses we can be.
• How are you daily prepared to give a reason for your hope?
• How does this hope impact your actions on a regular basis?
• Ask God to keep you on your toes, ever ready to give an answer for the hope that you have.
