2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.
3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
Here is how the Message paraphrases this passage, “But friends, that’s exactly who we are: children of God. And that’s only the beginning. Who knows how we’ll end up! What we know is that when Christ is openly revealed, we’ll see him—and in seeing him, become like him. All of us who look forward to his Coming stay ready, with the glistening purity of Jesus’ life as a model for our own.”
We are children of God! We are the heirs of God’s glory and promises! As we come to understand this, we are led to a greater desire to be like Him in holiness. When we hope in Him, we are purified! This is incredible news. The true hope of Christ’s coming is a purifying hope. Our identity in Him moves us to grow in holiness.
Children resemble their parents. Isn’t it fascinating to see how much a son or daughter can look exactly like their mom or dad? Similarly, as God’s children, we are to resemble God in our righteousness. We are to imitate Him in our love, compassion, forgiveness, and in the way we treat others. The Holy Spirit manifests Himself through us. Each day, we should strive to be more and more holy, joyfully anticipating Christ’s return when we will be made like Him. On that day, we will be like Jesus, and we are to pattern our lives after His example now in hopeful expectation of that final day.
• How does the reality that those in Christ are children of God change the way we relate to Him?
• How has your hope in Christ refined you?
• Ask God to help you earnestly yearn for the Lord’s return and to grow increasingly more like Him.
