And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened.
The shepherds were terrified? Well, of course they were. Why wouldn’t they be? After all, they had never seen anything like this before. Put yourselves in their shoes. What would you think? How would you feel? How would you react?
It was right for the shepherds to be fearful of being the presence of God’s messengers. Being in the presence of God should always lead us to a holy reverence and awe. But the message of the angels was not one of terror, rather it was one of peace and good news. Though facing the reality of God’s truth in our lives can be fearful, He is faithful to always give peace and joy as we listen to and obey His voice.
The message of glad tidings from the angels was indeed as wonderful as it was terrible, as unexpected as it was glorious. This message was the very heart of the gospel. It was a magnificent announcement of the Messiah’s arrival. Today, let’s join in with the angels and spend some time celebrating that Christ came for you and me!
