26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
What similarities do you share with you family members? What are some of the ways you are most different? All people share behavioral likenesses with their parents. Children can often recognize the way they emulate the things they have seen in their parents, even if they are annoyed by some of these same tendencies in their parents. Parents are often embarrassed to realize that they have passed along bad habits to their children, but can also be very proud to see their best qualities come through in their children. In both good and bad ways, God has designed children to bear a resemblance to their parents.
In today’s passage, we see that God gave a special place in creation to mankind. It is only mankind that was made in the image of God. In the creation of mankind, God created both man and woman. In the creation and distinction of the two genders, we see that God created mankind to be similar to Him. Man and woman were created to be in relationship with God and with one another. This is similar to God in that God has always existed in relationship with Himself as Father, Son, and Spirit.
At the same time, man and woman were made to be distinct from one another. They were created equal as mankind but with differing roles. In the trinity, we see that each person of the Godhead is completely God and united as one, but also distinct in His role.
God has created you as a specific person with a specific gender for His specific purposes. In this passage, we are reminded that God has given all people great value, as those created in His image. As those created by God, we must recognize the way He has created us and seek to honor Him in our relationships with others created in His image and likeness.
• What are some ways you recognize that people are made in the image of God?
• How has sin marred the image of God in people? What are some ways we show this?
• Pray and thank God that He has given you His image and likeness. Pray that you would seek to live in accordance with His purposes for your life and in a way that honors God and others in your relationships.
