O Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear to vindicate the orphan and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth will no longer cause terror.
International Justice Mission (IJM) is a global organization that protects the poor from violence throughout the developing world. They partner with local authorities to rescue victims of violence, bring criminals to justice, restore survivors, and strengthen justice systems. Their founder, attorney Gary Haugen, is a top human rights advocate. These verses are some of the anchor verses for IJM. In fact, Gary’s second book, Terrify No More, was named after verse 18. It highlights the removal of elementary-age girls from brothels.
IJM is one of many great examples of what today’s verses can look like lived out in today’s world. Check out their website for more information: ijm.org. On their site, you can hear some incredible rescue stories and see first-hand the life change that is being made possible through the collaborated efforts of IJM. If you are looking for a very tangible and practical way to live out these verses, consider helping support IJM through prayer and/or financial contribution, or find another Christian organization that you feel led to contribute to. Each of us can do a small part to make a greater impact and vindicate the oppressed.
When we let God strengthen our heart, some wonderful things begin to happen. Orphans find a home. Justice is increased. The subjugated are rescued. The homeless find shelter. Widows are supported. Those in need are helped. The burdened are blessed. The weary are uplifted. The discouraged are encouraged. The broken-hearted are ministered to. Ultimately, through all of these beautiful acts of service and kindness, terror is decreased. How can you help end the reign of terror?
• What do these verses inspire you to do? What plan will you make to actively care for the oppressed?
• How is God strengthening your heart this week?
• Pray for the IJM and similar organizations. Pray for terror to cease.
